From January 24th until Febuary 1st, the mountain resort of Štrbské Pleso in the High Tatras will host Universiade, the winter Olympics for university athletes (second only to the winter Olympics in terms of the size of the event and number of participating nations). Over 50 countries should be taking part this time round.
It will be co-host with Granada, Spain – but the Spanish city is lacking the right conditions, so Štrbské Pleso is hosting some of the events originally scheduled for Granada… action will shift to Spain for the second phase of the event on February 1st.
If you happen to be in the High Tatras between now and February 1st, some of the events taking place here include many of the skiing competitions (Nordic, cross-country and ski-jumping) and the biathlon.
Štrbské Pleso is no stranger to the event, having hosted it before in 1987. Nearby Poprad also hosted Winter Universiade in 1999.
