Another wine festival to mention to you guys… but you don’t object, right? This time it’s in the Tokaj wine region of south-eastern Slovakia (participating villages Malá Trňa, Vel’ka Trňa and Viničky, see this MAP).
Urban, of course, is the Patron saint of winemaking in Slovakia, and part of this celebration involves the blessing of the young wine. Urban, as well as being a saint of viticulture, was also a Pope and a protector against alcoholism (not quite sure how he combined these three seemingly contradictory roles).
Anyway, the end result is the Urban festival, this year taking place on May 30th. Tickets cost 20 Euros, but get you entrance to (and degustations in) those charismatic cellars which are normally not open to the public, as well as helping out with the blessing, which generally involves a bit more drinking besides. Free buses transport you between all three villages, too!
